Busta signs with Universal Motown
September 18, 2008 · Leave a Comment

First, of all HUGE FAN, if you didn’t already know.
…So a couple months ago (July), a rumor floated around that Busta Rhymes was getting dropped from Interscope because of some beef with Jimmy Iovine.
Well with time comes truth and it appears that this is sort of true. Busta is no longer with Interscope, but is signed to Universal Motown. And they are all branches off the same HUGE tree that is the Universal Music Group. Isn’t this confusing?! Busta’s move appears to be purely political in nature. His next album, Blessed, will still be released under Universal.
The bottom line is, to be successful in this HipHop game you have to move around, you have to work with different labels. Aside from Outkast and Lil Wayne, very few artists survive more than 10 years at the same label.
The fact that Busta has found a new home is good, but is testament to the fact that he still has the ability to cook up that fire, that makes your speakers pound!
Ok, I agree on some levels. it is rare to stay on the same label for more than a few years. And Busta is the shit. The rap game is like Major League [insert sport here]. But he’s really on the same label…
And secondly, while the chart is cool a bunch of the colors look the same. I know I’m being picky but that’s just the way I am. Someone has to do it!

Is Currensy the Next Up in New Orleans?
September 14, 2008 · Leave a Comment
As many of you should already know, New Orleans is not lacking in talent. Especially when it comes to the culinary arts, the brass band arts, and the spittin’ arts.

The Hot Spitta A.K.A. Currensy is an industry vet who was signed with New Orleans’ two largest record labels No Limit and Cash Money/Young Moola. Always left to play second fiddle in each label- featured artist with 504 Boyz (Wobble Wobble anyone?) and featured artist to You Know Who. Neither label seemed to fit his true persona, it seemed in order to fit in with each label’s majority he had to adjust his flow/style…. Currensy-… (Addiction Remix)
But its no surprise that after a series of amazing mixtapes,(can you say Fear and Loathing in New Orleans?) he has garnered a huge amount of publicity and buzz in the blogosphere. His last mixtape FIN (why, Currensy, why?), is set to drop soon.
I believe Currensy has a chance to go further than he is currently. He’s affiliated with Fly Society, a skate-inspired clothing line/crew that includes skater Terry Kennedy. However, Currensy’s recent push with his once-a-month mixtape reveals that Currensy is not getting any younger (I believe he’s 28) and in a culture obsessed with youth it is hard to hide your age, even when you look really young. With all that aside I’m co-signing Currensy as one of the next up in New Orleans (and the world), but also pointing out some cats that Currensy himself is co-signing- Paasky & Sanchez.

I’ve been anticipating two things: The End of Bush’s Term and Detox.

The Most anticipated album of the 21st Century? Maybe. For about eight years now fan’s of Dr. Dre and West Coast hip hop in general have been waiting patiently for the follow up to 2001. Well if you haven’t heard it yet here is Dre’s new protege Bishop Lamont and his single “Grow Up.” His debut album The Reformation is expected around October 08 (just 3 months). Bishop is next up! Seriously. I don’t cosign a lot of industry cats but I was convinced after hearing the mixtape he did with Black Milk, Caltroit. And his newest mixtape The Confessional, is a banger. He’s got incredible beat selection (he is Dre’s protege) and a dark sense of humor. Both of which rate really high in my book. Now without further ado….
Also if you forgot-
Dr. Dre protege’s…
Snoop Dogg
The D.O.C.
Eminem

M2M previews Trifecta
Trifecta was the first hip hop group that I interviewed here at M2M. The Trifecta mix tape is finally here. I was able to listen to it thanks to my roommate AKA Rockwell, who left a copy sitting in the common room. To be honest, I had very high expectations because I know how hard Rockwell has been working on this project and I have to say that I was blown away on all levels: beats, lyrics, production, etc. With their second project already underway, I see nothing but big things happening for this trio.
The group recently had a guest appearance on Crescent City Radios’ The Hip Hop Hour. Trifecta played some tracks for listeners and talked about The Sikkis and their upcoming project which is expected to be released in August 2008. It is my understanding that The Sikkis will be released on both TuneCore and iTunes soon. I have been listening to The Sikkis for two days straight and there are some great tracks, my personal favorite is track 13 (don’t have the tracks names!). The one track title I do know, “NO To The Bay”, features Loyola rapper G-Eazy. For more information check out Trifecta MySpace and Rockwell Beats.

TAG Records: Where Smelly Artists Get Stinking Rich
April 10, 2008 · Leave a Comment
Jermaine Dupri, legendary producer, announced today the formation of a new record label, TAG records. The hip hop label is being formed by Island Def Jam and Proctor & Gamble’s TAG brand and will be head by JD. Not only will TAG records release music via traditional sources but has a massive built in brand marketing department. Apparently, artists signed to the label will be featured in various TAG commercials. Considering how kick ass these commercials have been of late, this idea might actually work.
Artistic credibility is at stake when having not one- but two GIANT corporations take over your career and make you a viral video star via deoderant commercials… We’ll just have to see. Their webpage www.tagrecords.com brings you to their well laid out but friend-less Myspace.
New artists will be named officially in May.
Let the Internet/Music Rumor Mill commence!

And Now a Word from our sponsor -Jermaine Dupri.
“We’re confident the partnership will make a positive impact and bring opportunities to undiscovered urban creativity and vision.”
Creativity in Urban music?!
WTF- What do you think this is- the 90s?!?
“This is a non-traditional approach that blends our most valuable assets:
the artist and their music, with the power of brand marketing.”
They forgot to mention their other valuable asset…
Deoderant commercials where hot girls go crazy over smelly dudes.
